Chile - land of Rosa mosqueta
In the extreme south of the Americas is the longest country in the world. Chile runs two-thirds the length of South America's Pacific coast and its coastline stretches 2,670 miles. Include the national territories of Easter Island, the Juan Fernandez Islands and the section of Antarctica that Chile is very proud to claim, and the total territory of Chile is 1,250,000 km2.

Chile's geography is unique, diverse and rich in contrasts. To the north is the Atacama, the most arid desert in the world; the centre of Chile comprises rich valleys surrounded by the Andes Mountain Range to the west and the Coastal Mountains to the east; and to the south are the great lakes and forests, which open up to the Pacific Ocean. Chile's coast stretches for 2,000 km and is lined with sumptuous beaches. To complete the geographical jigsaw, in the extreme south are Chile's glaciers and the vast ice fields of Antarctica.

Chile is the largest exporter of fruit in the Southern hemisphere. Its organic produce enjoys the benefits of exceptional soil conditions, long growing season, lack of agro-chemical pollution, and a low incidence of crop pests and diseases.

Organic agriculture is a good opportunity for family and small to medium sized farmers to develop better standards of living. More than 16% of the Chilean population live in rural areas, and they need more motivation not to move to urban areas. A wide range of organic vegetables is produced on more than 5,000 small family owned plots.

Fruit and vegetables have had enormous success in Chile, but also a great number of natural herbs grow in the wild. For centuries these plants have been consumed locally and used by the native culture across the country. Chile exports about 25 types of organic natural herbs, which are grown on an organically controlled surface of more than 270 ha.

ECO Alliance Ltd works directly with farmers and producers in Chile to promote fair trade and encourage organic, sustainable production.
